The New York Yankees are reportedly all-in on Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada, with the team's need for dynamic infield pieces likely to lead to GM Brian Cashman and owner Hal Steinbrenner opening the pocketbooks to bring Moncada to the Bronx.
However, the Yankees will have some stiff competition for the coveted 19-year-old sensation before all is said and done in the courtship process.
As Brew Crew Ball's Noah Jarosh points out, "the Yankees are, as usual, the frontrunner when it comes to signing Moncada. They, along with the Rays, Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Angels all have an advantage in that they have already exceeded the maximum overage on bonus pools and can thus sign Moncada with little apprehension of future punishment. With the Yankees in dire need of some new infielders, Moncada would fit in well there after a little minor league polishing."
With many analysts comparing Moncada to the likes of Los Angeles Dodgers star Yasier Puig and top-tier Cubs prospect Jorge Soler, the Yankees aren't going to be too worried about giving Moncada time in the team's farm system to get acclimated to U.S. professional baseball - especially with his extraordinarily high ceiling from a production perspective.
