The New York Yankees were long derided for their thin farm system, notorious for trading away top prospects in exchange for high-priced proven MLB talents.
However, the Yankees have reversed their recent trend when it comes to the minor leagues, and will likely rise from 18th in Baseball America's farm system rankings to somewhere between 10-15 in 2015.
"We’re much deeper now,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “We’re much more flexible. We’re younger, more diverse.”
That diversity could play a major factor for the Yankees if they decide they're in on Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels or want to pursue another blockbuster trade.
"Hamels or no Hamels, Cashman may not be done maneuvering, even after making six trades between Nov. 12 and Jan. 1. Right-hander Luis Severino, the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect according to Baseball America, is close to untouchable; the Yankees believe that he could make an impact in the majors this season," writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. "But, Cashman, speaking generally about future acquisitions, said, “I’m open to anything.”
