The New York Yankees have been major free agency players so far (what else is new?), but according to GM Brian Cashman, there's still work left to be done. With Winter Meetings in full swing and plenty of options still available, the Yankees have their eyes on some big names - here are the players they've been linked to most recently:
Jeff Samardzija
Chicago Cubs pitcher Samardzija is being coveted by a number of teams right now, but the Yankees are definitely in play. The Atlanta Braves are believed to be the frontrunners for "Shark", who's coming off an 8-13 2013 where he posted a 4.34 ERA, but the Yankees are going to take a very serious look at the 6'5 right-hander.
Johan Santana
The 34-year old Santana isn't as young as Samardzija, and his shoulder surgeries have made signing him a gamble. Still, the awards on his resume (2x Cy Young, 4x All-Star) make him alluring. The Yankees aren't alone (eight teams are reportedly monitoring Santana) but this is one to keep an eye on.
Omar Infante
According to numerous reports, the Yankees are eyeing Infante as their number one choice to replace the departed Robinson Cano. The Venezuelan infielder won't come cheap, but we think the Yankees are finally ready to bite the bullet and spend some money in free agency.
Mike Pelfrey
Nothing imminent to report, but the Yankees are keeping close tabs on Pelfrey, the 6'7 pitcher who most recently played for the Twins. A Scott Boras client, Pelfrey underwent Tommy John surgery in Spring 2012 and went 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA last season.
