New York Yankees Rumors: Joe Girardi Leaving Options Open At Closer; Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller To Split Duties?

The Yankees still have a Mariano Rivera-sized hole to fill at the end of games, but it sounds like manager Joe Girardi is happy to at least have options.

When interviewed by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Girardi had some interesting things to say about how he's approaching the closer job for the time being:

“I think guys like to know their roles, so I think if we can iron it out, I think it would be a good thing to do,” Girardi said. “But I think you can also create an atmosphere where you say, ‘You know what, guys? I’ll prepare you every day in a sense of what I think is going to happen, and here are your matchups, the guys that I’m probably going to bring you in against.'”

Girardi has two players capable of filling in at closer despite a lack of experience there, and it sounds like both Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller are going to see time there depending on matchups. Neither is a proven commodity at closer yet, but both have intriguing potential...so at the very least, the Yankees are a step ahead of where they were just a year ago.
