New York Yankees rumors are going to be coming in waves as we get closer to spring training, and now reports around Major League Baseball are indicating that the Yankees may be on the cusp of an extremely significant trade.
Despite the fact that initial talks between the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks fell through a couple weeks ago, several Major League Baseball sources believe that the trade, which would send Diamondbacks' reliever JJ Putz to the Yankees for future Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki.
There are many who believe that the Yankees may opt to hang on to the 39-year-old outfielder, as a way of helping Japanese sensation Masahiro Tanaka acclimate to his surroundings in the Bronx. However, Suzuki's production has been down in recent years, and it may behoove the New York Yankees to get value out of Suzuki via trade before it is too late.
Ichiro Suzuki posted the lowest batting average of his Major League Baseball career in 2013, hitting .262 with just 7 homers and 35 RBIs in 150 games.
If the Yankees were to acquire JJ Putz, he could either be slotted in as the heir apparent to future Yankee Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera, or could serve in a setup role for recently-name New York Yankees closer David Robertson. The 36-year-old reliever had an ERA of just 2.36 in 40 appearances for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013.
