Be prepared for a year of New York Yankees rumors devoted to possible replacements for legendary Yankees shortstop and future Hall-of-Famer Derek Jeter.
Here is the first interesting one to crop up--could delayed contract talks with the Los Angeles Dodgers leave the window open for 3-time MLB All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez to join the New York Yankees in 2015?
Jesse Schindler of New York Yankees insider blog Pinstripe Alley pontificated on this very question earlier today--
"Quite possibly the biggest name to potentially hit next year's open market, Hanley Ramirez would, theoretically, be a very good Jeter replacement, even if he's a little shaky defensively. From an offensive standpoint, however, Hanley had arguably his best season in the majors last season, hitting .345/.402/.638."
Hanley Ramirez spoke out just recently of his desire to be a Los Angeles Dodger for the rest of his playing career, but as Schindler points out, contract talks were "not imminent" as recently as December.
If the Dodgers and Ramirez do not work out an extension before the 2014 MLB season, the challenge of succeeding one of the greatest shortstops of all time, along with the New York Yankees' deep pocketbooks, could make the Bronx an intriguing proposition for the 30-year-old Dominican Republic native.
