New York Yankees rumors are taking a break from the normal trade and free agent buzz, as Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig has come out with glowing words for Yankees captain Derek Jeter after today's announcement that Jeter will retire after the 2014 season.
Bud Selig's statements are succinct, but hit at the heart of what the 19-year veteran and New York Yankees constant has meant to baseball as a whole:
"In the 21-plus years in which I have served as Commissioner, Major League Baseball has had no finer ambassador than Derek Jeter."
Selig added, "Since his championship rookie season of 1996, Derek has represented all the best of the National Pastime on and off the field. He is one of the most accomplished and memorable players of his -- or any -- era."
The oft-beleaguered commissioner finished off his words on the sure-to-be first ballot Hall of Famer with a glowing commendation of Jeter as both a player and a person--
"Derek is the kind of person that generations have emulated proudly, and he remains an exemplary face of our sport. Major League Baseball looks forward to celebrating his remarkable career throughout the 2014 season.”
Derek Jeter's last scheduled game at Yankee Stadium is September 25th. Tickets are on sale now.
