The New York Yankees are one of many teams currently linked to 19-year-old Cuban middle infield sensation Yoan Moncada, with his like $100 million+ asking price (including $30 to $50 million in a signing bonus) making the deep-pocketed Yankees a potential favorite.
New York's need for help in the middle infield is well documented, and one National League talent evalulator believes that Moncada could be a transcendant talent on the level of a young Robinson Cano.
“He could be the next Robinson Cano/Chase Utley, but more Cano. That’s the kind of potential bat we’re talking about,” one National League talent evaluator said. An NL GM told Cafardo that Moncada “may be better than[Yasiel] Puig or [Jose] Abreu or [Yoenis] Cespedes or [Jorge] Soler.”
Moncada is scheduled to have four or five private workouts this week, with FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal revealing on Thursday that the 19-year-old worked out for Dodgers executives in Clearwater, FL. The Yankees already held a private session with Moncada back in January.
Besides New York and Los Angeles, the Red Sox, Cubs, Rangers, Padres, Giants, Tigers, Braves, Brewers, Rays and Angels are among the teams that have either scouted Moncada and/or invited him in for private workouts, according to multiple sources and media reports.
