NY Yankees Rumors: Yankees just "a fantasy team" of mismatched free agents?

With NY Yankees rumors relatively quiet at the beginning of spring workouts, one New York columnist is making his displeasure known over the NY Yankees recent offseason spending spree.

Columnist Brad Kallet of CBS New York ripped into the NY Yankees' offseason philosophy yesterday morning, decrying what he feels to be an impersonal approach to building a baseball team--

"The Yankees are a fantasy team, a subpar All-Star team. They are a group of aging superstars who have been thrown together to win a championship. There’s no real rhyme or reason to the roster, no chemistry to speak of."

Kallet admits that the acquisitions of players such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Carlos Beltran, and Masahiro Tanaka make the NY Yankees "clearly capable of winning 90-plus games and contending for a 28th World Series title."

However, Kallet's argument centers on his opinion that the NY Yankees are "nothing more than mercenaries, hired guns. And they will fire and kill their opponents with their quick bats, speed and power." Kallet added, "But will it be all that special when they do?"

The NY Yankees committed $471 million in payroll this offseason, raising both the expectations and the ire of many baseball fans and MLB analysts.
