In the latest NY Yankees rumors surrounds suspended Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez, eight-time All Star and former Yankee Darryl Strawberry publicly backed the controversial slugger in a radio interview on Tuesday.
On ESPN New York's "The Michael Kay Show," Strawberry lashed out at the Hall of Famers who have bashed Alex Rodriguez in the media, labeling them "hypocrites." Strawberry added, "They want to talk about these players that used steroids. There were drugs before then. They used drugs to get an edge. They used greenies to cheat. ... Everybody has done something."
Darryl Strawberry struggled with severe drug addiction during his career, famously checking into the Betty Ford clinic in the early 90's as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. When asked if he would have done steroids if they were around in his era, Strawberry didn't hesitate--"No question, I don't doubt it."
The 1983 National League Rookie of the Year also stated that he was "sad" for Alex Rodriguez, stating "all of them did it, if that's the case. He is getting a raw deal regardless of how you look at it. You can't just make one player the villain."
Alex Rodriguez filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball on January 13th in an attempt to reduce the 162-game suspension that arbitrator Fredric Horowitz previous reduced from 211 games on January 11th.
