It ended as it always seemed to with the great Derek Jeter at the plate.
In his final at-bat at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees captain laced a game-winning walk-off RBI single in the ninth inning, finishing off the Baltimore Orioles by a final of 6-5 to save the Yankees after they blew a 3-run lead in the top of the ninth.
With players and fans alike in tears, Jeter basked in his final moment as a player with his teammates. Even the Yankees' AL East rivals, the Orioles, remained on the field out of respect for one of the greatest players to have ever played the game.
"I'm just trying to do my job, so thank you guys," Jeter said to the YES Network after the game.
Jeter (who went 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs in the contest) could barely contain his tears addressing the Yankee Stadium faithful, and even took time to congratulate the Orioles on their run to an AL East title.
However, it was Jeter's turn to be congratulated on Thursday. Going to the opposite field like he has hundreds and hundreds of times before, Jeter not only cemented a win - he cemented one of the most unique and impressive legacies in the history of the New York Yankees.
"I don't even know what just happened to be honest with you," he said to the MLB Network. "It's weird. If the game would have just ended in the top of the ninth, I'd be in tears right now."
Jeter also indicated that he should play in "some capacity" in Boston over the weekend, but has likely seen his last game at shortstop.
