The best thing about baseball free agency is that, no matter how well things go for our favorite teams, we can always go off on a fantasy rotisserie tangent and look for player that make us say what if. With that being said, here's 3 Free Agents The Yankees Should Have Signed This Offseason.
2B Howie Kendrick
The Yankees are banking on Starlin Castro as the answer to all their middle-infield problems, but we're really not so sure. Why not put together a contingency plan centered around the most consistent veteran middle infielder on the market? Kendrick has hit below .280 just once over his ten-year career (2010) and gives you above average defense. His price tag is a little higher than the Yankees are want to pay for a position player north of thirty. However, if anyone is worth it, it's Kendrick.
LHP Scott Kazmir
With Kazmir, you have a lefty who presents more matchup problems AND has a track record of putting together Cy Young-level stretches of brilliance. The Yankees stayed out of the bidding wars for the top names on the early market (David Price, Johnny Cueto, etc.), which means they're still saddled with dead weight such as Ivan Nova while they continue to look for bargain options.
While Kazmir wasn't necessarily a cheap get before he landed with the Dodgers, he would have been a fantastic southpaw piece to slot behind Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda in the rotation.
OF Yoenis Cespedes
Carlos Beltran's albatross of a salary comes off the books next year. The team has already been shopping Brett Gardner off and on. Cespedes' representatives reportedly contacted the Yankees front office in hopes that they would match his eventual three-year, $75 million deal with the New York Mets. They didn't and they missed out on a rocket outfield arm and powerful middle-of-the-order bat because of their hesitance -- payroll concerns or not.
