The MLB Trade Deadline has passed and it's time to evaluate how the New York Yankees fared. The Yankees made several moves, both on deadline day and in the week or so leading up. We've broken down each trade the Yankees made, and have a cumulative grade at the bottom. It does include the moves made a few days before the deadline. With that in mind, here are the Yankees' MLB Trade Deadline grades.
Trade 1:
Cubs Get: RP Aroldis Chapman
Yankees Get: SS Gleyber Torres, RP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney, OF Rashad Crawford
Torres is the gem of this deal, and a one-for-one swap would have been pretty fair in its own right. He's just 19 and will need some more growing time, but he's a future starter at short. Getting back Warren and Crawford was just a bonus (although Crawford shouldn't develop into anything special). McKinney should develop into a starter (and maybe more) for the Yankees and was a first rounder back in 2013. The Yankees got way more than they originally gave up for Chapman, making this an even better deal.
Trade 2:
Indians Get: RP Andrew Miller
Yankees Get: OF Clint Frazier, SP Justus Sheffield, RP Ben Heller and J.P. Feyereisen
Miller will be missed, but getting two of the Indians' best prospects made it a deal that had to be done. Frazier might be best in the corner outfield, but is one of the most-touted OF prospects and a Top 25 overall. Sheffield is still in Single-A, but is just 20 and has a bright future. Heller isn't a highly touted prospect, but might be the first to reach the majors. He's been sharp at Triple-A and Double-A this year. Feyereisen won't be up as soon, but profiles as another bullpen arm.
Trade 3:
Diamondbacks Get: SP Vincente Campos
Yankees Get: RP Tyler Clippard
This was the only non-rebuild move the Yankees made. Campos is a Top 15 prospect for the Yankees, although he's more of a back-end of the rotation type starter. Clippard takes the place of Miller on the active roster as the top set-up man. He'll be with the Yankees next year too.
Trade 4:
Rangers Get: OF/DH Carlos Beltran
Yankees Get: SP Dillon Tate, SP Eric Swanson, SP Nick Green
Green and Swanson aren't expected to do much, as they're more or less throw-ins in the trade. The real gem is Tate, the No. 4 overall pick in 2015. He's been awful this year, with a 5.12 ERA at Single-A ball. However, he wen No. 4 for a reason and getting him for Beltran is a great deal for New York. Yes, they'll miss Beltran the rest of this season, but it was the right move.
Trade 5:
Pirates Get: SP Ivan Nova
Yankees Get: Two Players To Be Named Later
We don't know whom the Yankees are getting for Nova, but it doesn't really matter. Nova was set to be a free agent and with the Yankees not really contending, they needed to get something for him.
Grade: A+
Look at all those names. This is how you start a rebuild. The Yankees already had a solid farm system, now they might have the best one in the MLB. Years of trading prospects for aging players had finally caught up to the Yankees, and they've managed to quickly get the minor leagues stocked once again. If the Yankees can gets these players to develop and reach their potential, they'll be pushing once again for World Series titles. No team had a better trade deadline than the New York Yankees.
