Red Bulls’ offseason splash breaks through, and so does the team

Stinging from a midweek CONCACAF Champions League ouster and struggling midway against lowly Montreal, Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch wasn’t a happy man at halftime. Some of his players looked like they didn’t want to play, and he said as much. But after the break, they had a breakthrough.

The Red Bulls came out on the front foot and took it to the Impact for a 3-1 victory after second-half goals from Alejandro Romero Gamarra and Michael Amir Murillo.

After a first half that saw the Red Bulls (3-2-0, nine points) win fewer duels, hold less possession and get played to a stalemate at home by subpar Montreal (2-4, six points), they dominated the second.
