The Red Bulls put striker Fredrik Gulbrandsen on waivers Tuesday.
The striker had been on a season-long loan from Austrian sister club RB Salzburg. He had no goals and one assist in 364 minutes, spread over 12 appearances.
If the 24-year-old Norwegian clears waivers, as expected, he will return to Salzburg. His departure means two-striker formations are done for the foreseeable future, and the Red Bulls will stick with their traditional 4-2-3-1. It also would clear an international spot on the roster for the summer transfer window, which runs July 10-Aug. 9.
One viable candidate is French forward Alexy Bosetti, 24, who finished a week-long trial.
