Luke Rodgers must surely rank in the top five - top three, perhaps - one-season wonders of all time for the New York Red Bulls (and MetroStars). And his contribution to RBNY should also include credit for giving Lloyd Sam the necessary encouragement to give soccer in America a try.
Back in 2012, Sam (who would go on to make 126 appearances in all competitions for RBNY - scoring 24 goals, tallying 26 assists, and contributing to the winning of the first two major trophies in club history) was on trial with the Red Bulls, explaining how he'd been persuaded to try his luck in New York:
