Why Rangers’ defenseman’s emergence should mean McIlrath over Diaz

Here is a thought: Brady Skjei’s surprisingly strong camp should make it easier for the Rangers to start the season with Dylan McIlrath.

As the Blueshirts enter Friday, management is either continuing to ponder its options or in the midst of attempting to work trades following Thursday’s hockey department meetings.

But keeping McIlrath rather than veteran Raphael Diaz shouldn’t be a difficult call, even while understanding that Diaz theoretically plays the brand of instinctive skating, puck-moving hockey that coach Alain Vigneault believes in devoutly.

Vigneault does — and should — have significant input into the makeup of the roster.
