Rangers assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson has left the team to become head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis, who was a teammate of Samuelsson in Hartford, then in Pittsburgh, where they won a pair of Stanley Cups together, made the announcement Tuesday.
“Ulf has built a very strong coaching resume during a decade behind the bench in the AHL, NHL and Swedish league,” Francis said. “He has a proven history of helping to develop young players and understands the organizational culture that we are building here.
