The final defense battle: Ryan Lindgren vs. Brendan Smith

One of the many defense contracts that did not work out for the Rangers was that of Brendan Smith. After sending second and third round picks for Smith at the 2017 trade deadline, the Rangers were impressed by his 18 games in New York and signed him to a four year deal with a $4.35 million cap hit. In the grand scheme of things, the contract isn’t as bad as the others we point fingers at, but it is still a contract that just hasn’t worked out.

The Rangers appear to be stuck with Smith for at least this season, which isn’t necessarily ideal, but far from a worst case scenario.
