Even with defenseman Brendan Smith in the fold, Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton still has some irons in the fire, and is keeping his options open before Wednesday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline.
“It’s not over, “ Gorton said after landing the Detroit Red Wings defenseman for a 2017 third-round pick and a 2018 second-rounder Tuesday. “But if you want a player in this type of market, generally you overpay . . . like everybody else, we’re all talking. What’s going to happen? I don’t know.”
Once the Capitals traded late Monday for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who was at the top of the Rangers’ wish list, Gorton focused on Smith, 28.
