On the first day of NHL free agency, the Rangers didn’t play with the big boys. And that’s probably a good thing, because – as usual – the frenzy was an absurd series of contracts for too much money and too many years.
The Rangers sat out that portion of the day. They didn’t get dramatically better with the few signings they did make, but they sure didn’t make their strangling salary cap situation any worse.
Rangers GM Jeff Gorton, on the first anniversary of his taking over from Glen Sather, made some minor moves, but will have to make any of the significant changes needed up front and on defense, via trades this summer.
