Rangers sign ex-Kings center Jarret Stoll

The cap-strapped Rangers announced out of nowhere on Monday morning that they had signed unrestricted free agent center Jarret Stoll, taking a low-risk but potentially high-reward step to fortify their lineup down the middle — particularly for the postseason.

Stoll, 33, who has signed a one-year, one-way deal, is a proven veteran who helped the Los Angeles Kings win two Stanley Cups, including the defeat of the Rangers in the 2014 Final. But he has remained on the market this summer after an April arrest at a Las Vegas Strip swimming pool led to a felony charge for cocaine possession.
