Rangers should use Svechnikov’s deal with Canes as barometer for Alexis Lafrenière and Kaapo Kakko

The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to terms Thursday with RFA Andrei Svechnikov on an eight-year, $62 million extension through the 2028-29 season. The deal will have an AAV of $7.75M against the cap and a modified 10 team no-trade clause starting in year five.

Per CapFriendly, the contract breakdown is as follows:

  • 2021-22: $2M base salary + $4M signing bonus
  • 22-23: $7M
  • 23-24: $9M
  • 24-25: $9M
  • 25-26: $10M (M-NTC)
  • 26-27: $7M (M-NTC)
  • 27-28: $6M (M-NTC)
  • 28-29: $8M (M-NTC)

Svechnikov’s deal is exactly what the New York Rangers need to begin considering for Alexis Lafrenière and to a lesser degree Kaapo Kakko.
