Rangers mourn NYPD detective, the inspiration for team award

A woman, who said she was a cousin of Steven McDonald, walked into a bar on Long Island and asked for a moment of silence so she could speak.

“All he wanted,” she said, “was to have a cheers in his name.”

And so a drink went around for the former NYPD detective, who died Tuesday, days after suffering cardiac arrest, as it likely did throughout the metropolitan area. McDonald was a lifelong Rangers fan after whom the franchise named an annual award in 1987, the year after he was paralyzed in a horrific shooting in Central Park before forgiving his shooter.
