Rangers defense in intriguing limbo with Kevin Klein ailing

The Rangers might be without projected top-four defenseman Kevin Klein for Thursday’s season opener at the Garden against the Islanders.

Klein was scheduled for an MRI exam Tuesday afternoon after experiencing a second consecutive day of back spasms that kept him off the ice.

“We’ll get those results and see how he feels [Wednesday],” said coach Alain Vigneault.

Absent Klein, Marc Staal was paired at practice with Nick Holden, who skated on his off, right side. Ryan McDonagh skated with Dan Girardi on the club’s throwback top tandem while Brady Skjei and Adam Clendening formed the third pair.
