Rangers assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson is becoming head coach of the AHL Charlotte Checkers, the Checkers announced Tuesday.
Samuelsson had been overseeing the Blueshirts’ defense and penalty kill under head coach Alain Vigneault for three seasons.
The Rangers said no replacement has yet been named for the former defenseman.
The Checkers are an affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.
One potential candidate could be current Hartford Wolfpack assistant coach Jeff Beukeboom, 52, who played for the Oilers and Blueshirts. He has been running the defense for the Wolf Pack and tutoring propects such as Dylan McIlrath, Ryan Graves and Brady Skjei.
