From Martin Biron to Cam Talbot and now Antti Raanta, the New York Rangers have iced some of the best goaltending tandems in the league over the past seven seasons. Granted, when one-half of that duo is Henrik Lundqvist, you’re already in great shape.
What can’t be overstated is the play of those three netminders under the tutelage of the spectacular Benoit Allaire.
However, the backups’ performances is also a double-edged sword.
For example, the Rangers decided to move Cam Talbot in the off-season after extending him, rather than lose him for nothing. Talbot most certainly would have explored his options in free agency the following season, having priced himself out of New York.
