EDMONTON – Mark Messier’s eyes said it all.
The Hall of Fame six-time Stanley Cup champion, including five with the Edmonton Oilers and one as The Captain of the 1994 Rangers, couldn’t joke about the likelihood of an “emotional” Glen Sather crying at his banner-raising ceremony Friday night without tearing up himself.
“I’m sure it won’t be easy for him, and he told me (Thursday) night not to look at him when he’s speaking, so I’ll have my Kleenexes ready for him,” said Messier, whose iconic No. 11 rests retired in honor of his prominent contributions to one of the greatest NHL teams of all time from 1979-90.
