Before Saturday’s game in Columbus, Rangers coach Gerard Gallant wouldn’t commit to splitting the weekend’s back-to-back games between his two goaltenders. But when Igor Shesterkin was forced to leave Saturday’s game in the third period after being run into by Columbus forward Alexandre Texier, Gallant opted to start Alexandar Georgiev in Sunday’s home game against the Devils.
Shesterkin, Gallant insisted, was fine and could have played. And indeed, he did serve as the backup goaltender. But Georgiev, who stepped in and played the final 6:45 Saturday night, got his fourth start of the season.
