Despite blowing penalty shot, Carl Hagelin remains upbeat

WASHINGTON — Carl Hagelin was not sullen or shaken or despondent. He sat there with his head up, knowing that the chance to tie Game 4 sat there on his stick, no one pressuring him, and he didn’t get the job done.

“What happened, happened,” he said with a shrug.

Hagelin was awarded a penalty shot with 11:59 remaining in the third period, with his Rangers trailing the Capitals, 2-1. The speedy Swedish winger was able to pull off the move he wanted, dragging a fake to his backhand and lifting it up about two feet off the ice, but it was still snagged in the glove of Washington goalie Braden Holtby.
