Colon among many ageless wonders in New York sports scene

Sometimes it's easy to forget that Bartolo Colon is 42 years old.

Like in the weeks since Aug. 26, when the veteran right-hander began a streak of scoreless innings that only came to an end Thursday, at 31 spotless frames.

On a team stocked with young pitching talent, Colon has pitched like a spring chicken himself lately, helping the Mets as they close in on a division title.

In celebration of the ageless wonder's recent success, here's a list of New York athletes who continued to perform after turning 40, with Colon and current Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez rounding things out (years in parentheses denote seasons spent with the team at 40 or older):

Mark Messier, Rangers (2000-2004)

After helping the Rangers win the Stanley Cup as part of six memorable seasons in New York during his 30s, Mark Messier returned to Madison Square Garden to play four more seasons before retiring in his 40s.
