Mets manager Mickey Callaway said on Wednesday that Zack Wheeler has been shut down for the rest of the season due to the right-hander's high workload, not health.
Next to Jacob deGrom, Wheeler has been the Mets' best starter, especially in the second half, going 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 11 starts. The 28-year-old was three innings shy of matching his career high of 185 1/3, set in 2014.
