A Wheel’ shame.
The Fab 5 will not finally make consecutive turns throughout the rotation — at least not to open the season — as the Mets demoted Zack Wheeler to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday. Seth Lugo will take his spot as the No. 5 starter.
It appeared as if Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz and Wheeler would finally get their chance after Jason Vargas needed surgery on his right (non-pitching) hand, but the Mets decided they couldn’t go with Wheeler after his troubling spring.
Wheeler lasted just two innings Thursday against the Nationals and allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits.
