The wild card might not be the goal the Yankees set when they built a seven-game lead in the AL East in late July, but it’s a situation Justin Wilson is accustomed to.
Wilson spent the last two seasons with the Pirates, who needed the wild card to get into the playoffs both years before being traded to the Yankees in the offseason in exchange for catcher Francisco Cervelli.
“We were fighting for a spot pretty much right til the end both years,” Wilson said after recording four outs — all strikeouts — in the Yankees’ 5-0 win over the Mets at Citi Field on Saturday.
