The Yankees have claimed right-handed relief pitcher Michael Tonkin off waivers from the Mets, marking the second time that New York’s National League franchise has lost Tonkin after designating him for assignment during the 2024 season.
Tonkin broke camp with the Mets but found himself in a couple of less-than-ideal situations, as Carlos Mendoza twice deployed him in extra innings. Neither of those outings went well, and to be fair to Tonkin, he probably wasn’t the right pitcher to use in those spots. After his third appearance with the Mets, he was designated for assignment, and the Mets wound up trading him to the Twins for cash.
