Why Mets believe just treading water ends now

If this counts as momentum, the Mets will take it: They went an entire weekend in Detroit without placing a player on the disabled list.

That snapped a streak of three straight series in which the Mets lost at least one player to injury, with Jose Reyes, Juan Lagares, Justin Ruggiano, Asdrubal Cabrera and most notably Yoenis Cespedes sidelined and eventually placed on the DL.

“The fact we’re missing so many pieces and still in the thick of things is positive because we’re going to get some of those guys back,” Curtis Granderson said.

Until then, the Mets — who began Monday trailing the Marlins and Cardinals by two games in the race for the National League’s second wild card — will attempt to make headway against what, for the next nine days, represents an underbelly of the schedule.
