What Mets’ roster crunch looks like as spring training winds down

PORT ST. LUCIE — Two first basemen? Three catchers? Seven or eight relievers? These are just some of the roster questions Mets officials are contemplating in these final days of spring training.

Thirty-nine players remain in major league camp, but the number will be sliced to 25 in the hours leading up to next Thursday’s season opener in Washington.

Leading the intrigue might be how the Mets plan to handle first base, given the strong performances this spring by Pete Alonso and Dominic Smith. The Mets might keep them both, as Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie prepare to begin the season on the injured list.
