PHOENIX — Dominic Smith homered with a sore right thumb a day earlier, but the Mets weren’t taking any chances Sunday.
The first baseman/outfielder is expected to receive an MRI exam in New York on Monday, after he was scratched from the lineup against the Diamondbacks.
Smith said he hurt the thumb while striking out on a “weird swing” Saturday before blasting an eighth-inning homer at Chase Field.
“My bottom hand kind of slipped off the bat and caught between my wrist and when I followed through and got my top hand through I hyperextended my thumb a little bit,” Smith said after the Mets’ 7-1 loss.
