Wally Backman is finally a manager in New York

Wally Backman is coming back to New York.

The Long Island Ducks announced on Wednesday that Backman would be their next manager.

“I’m excited to join the Ducks knowing the professionalism of the organization and how much they care about winning,” Backman, 59, said in a news release. “It’s an added bonus that this opportunity brings me back to New York and keeps me in the Atlantic League, where I have enjoyed managing.”

Backman, a fiery infielder from the Mets’ 1986 World Series team, spent 2010-2016 managing and coaching in the franchise’s minor-league system and was a popular choice among fans whenever there was frustration with at the team’s major league manager.
