NEW YORK -- Throughout this decade, the Mets have negotiated some of their most significant player contracts with Brodie Van Wagenen. They are about to complete an entirely different deal with one of professional baseball's most powerful player agents.
Multiple sources said Friday that the Mets have chosen Van Wagenen as their next general manager. As of Saturday afternoon, the Mets were hammering out contract details under the expectation of finalizing terms as soon as this weekend. They hope to announce a completed deal either Tuesday or Thursday, depending upon when the World Series ends.
A 44-year-old whose clients include Jacob deGrom, Yoenis Cespedes, Tim Tebow, Ryan Zimmerman and Robinson Cano, Van Wagenen will become one of only a handful of agents to transition to a Major League front office.
