Unsung hero validates Collins’ hunch and helps the Mets sweep

WASHINGTON — You never want to sit one out, especially in a pennant race, but let’s be honest about something: For most of the night, it wasn’t a bad thing to be safely in the dugout with your arms folded, tossing back sunflower seeds, watching other people’s misery.

“Honestly?” Travis d’Arnaud said, referring to Stephen Strasburg, who was dealing like there was a baccarat table in front of him. “He didn’t miss one spot.”

“Nasty,” Kelly Johnson said. “Beyond nasty, really.”

Johnson could see all of that from the bench on his night off, could see Strasburg throwing curveballs that almost seemed to laugh as they dipped and darted around Mets bats, could see teammates lugging those bats back to the dugout shaking their heads.
