With the organization reeling financially from the Bernie Madoff fallout, Sandy Alderson tried to unearth hidden gems. Such was the hope when the team acquired Collin Cowgill— an undersized outfielder who had posted some solid minor league numbers—prior to the 2013 season.
Cowgill had a great spring training, winning a spot as the team’s starting center fielder. This looked like promising development when Cowgill announced his presence with a memorable Opening Day performance—including a grand slam—in an 11-2 victory.
