Trio of homers helps Mets spoil Nats' opener

WASHINGTON -- The Mets and Nationals have ruled the National League East since 2014, with one of the teams capturing the division crown every season since then. Washington has won three of them, so even though these two foes are perhaps the favorites to finish 1-2 in the division once again, New York is out to prove it can serve as legitimate contenders in 2018.

The Mets rode a trio of huge home runs to an 8-2 victory on Thursday afternoon to spoil the Nationals' home opener at Nationals Park. Jay Bruce hit a grand slam, Yoenis Cespedes launched a solo home run and Michael Conforto added a two-run homer in his first game back from the disabled list.
