Seven years after acquiring him as their catcher of the future, the Mets have made Travis d’Arnaud their catcher of the past.
The Mets designated d’Arnaud for assignment Sunday, ending what had been a tough season after Tommy John surgery.
The 30-year-old was just 2-of-23 this year since returning, usually serving as backup to Wilson Ramos. The Mets have Tomas Nido and Rene Rivera at Triple-A Syracuse.
Mets fans had begun booing the catcher, who was the original jewel of the late 2012 trade with the Blue Jays that also netted Noah Syndergaard for R.A. Dickey.
