The question was posed to Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson midway through his somber news conference Friday afternoon. Why, he was asked, did the Mets not give Steven Matz a magnetic resonance imaging exam after he told the team about a tugging sensation near his left armpit in the wake of his rousing major league debut?
Why, instead, did the Mets let Matz go out and make a second start?
“What happens with pitchers quite often is there are ‘ouches’ and other issues that come up in the course of throwing,” Alderson replied.
