A Mets season already in tatters by the Fourth of July is not a new phenomenon. But the architect of this latest disappointment has changed, and he owes it to the fans to explain what occurred and if there is a plan for the future.
It’s admirable that general manager Brodie Van Wagenen kept an early-season promise and mixed with “The 7 Line” fans in the outfield seats at Citi Field for a Subway Series game this week, shaking hands with the customers and posing for pictures. From a charisma standpoint, the Mets haven’t had this kind of presence at GM since Steve Phillips around the turn of the millennium.
