James Loney may have worn a Mets uniform for his last major league game.
The veteran first baseman requested and received his release from the Braves’ Triple-A Gwinnett team on Monday, four days after attempting to resume his career.
The 33-year-old Loney signed a minor league deal with the team on Thursday after the Braves learned first baseman Freddie Freeman will miss about 10 weeks with a fractured left wrist.
Loney expected to make the minor league stint a short one, and he did, but not in the way he hoped. Instead of promoting him, the Braves acquired Matt Adams from the Cardinals on Saturday.
