This former No. 1 pick advancing quickly through Mets’ system

BINGHAMTON — We love to play the game. The “Who else was available?” game when looking at teams’ amateur draft selections.

For Gavin Cecchini, the Mets’ first-round selection and the 12th pick overall in the 2012 draft, the game can be rather unforgiving. After all, the Cardinals took star right-hander Michael Wacha at No. 19, and Toronto chose currently injured pitching stud Marcus Stroman, a native of Medford on Long Island, at No. 22.

Cecchini, the 21-year-old shortstop, handles this in the most straightforward manner: He ignores the noise and focuses on playing the game (of baseball) — a skill at which he appears to be improving after a laborious start.
