The Mets needed a great outing from Steven Matz on Sunday. For his own sake, and for the overworked bullpen’s sake, as Terry Collins admitted to Keith Hernandez that the team would have been in big trouble had Matz been bombed again. So it was a huge help when the Mets put three on the board before Matz even took the mound. A Curtis Granderson walk, an Asdrubal Cabrera single, a Michael Conforto double off the wall and then a Lucas Duda two run single got the job done. But if anybody could have used some immediate help or some sign from above that everything was going to be okay, it was Matz.
