PORT ST. LUCIE — Don’t try telling Steven Matz it didn’t count.
After three straight brutal spring-training appearances, the Mets lefty needed success, just for sanity’s sake. Over 5 ²/u2083 innings against the Nationals on Sunday he found that inner peace.
“It’s nice to get some results in spring training,” Matz said after allowing one run on one hit, but struggling late with command to finish with four walks. “You are still out there working on stuff, but it’s nice to get some results.”
Clint Robinson homered on a hanging breaking ball from Matz in the fourth for the Nationals’ first run.
